Workforce Programs

The role of General Practice Network NT (GPNNT) is to improve the recruitment, retention and equitable distribution of quality General Practitioners (GPs) in rural and remote NT using the Rural Remote Metropolitan Area (RRMA) Classification system. GPNNT recruit to RRMA categories 3 - 7. GPNNT provides comprehensive advice, personal and professional support to GPs, practices and health services through every stage of a doctor's employment in a rural or remote location of the NT.

We offer extensive orientation and training to assist GPs in taking up the unique challenge of working in NT communities, including site visits to familiarise the GP with the practice and the community. Other areas of support include counselling and support services, and professional mentoring.

GPNNT offers a number of grants to attract and keep GPs in the Territory:

  • Site Visits, as mentioned before, allow the GP to become familiar with the practice and the community and to meet the clinic or practice team prior to relocation.
  • Relocation Grants cover actual costs of moving to the NT for the GP and their family.
  • Orientation and Training Grants prepare doctors for rural and remote practices.
  • Remote Area Grants are available to employers of GPs to supplement the payment of GP salaries.

Our support programs for GPs working in rural and remote NT practices include:

  • The Locum Support program provides subsidised, timely and appropriate locum relief to GPs in rural and remote areas.
  • Through the NT Division' Continuing Professional Development programs, GPNNT fund acess to quality education and training for rural and remote GPs.
  • GP Networking Events are sponsored by GPNNT to bring GPs together for peer support, training, and discussion of key issues.
  • GPNNT administers the Rural Retention Program Flexible Payments Scheme, enabling long-serving GPs in rural and remote areas to be rewarded financially.
  • GPNNT also administers the 5 Year Overseas Trained Doctor Scheme, allowing overseas trained GPs to gain earlier access to an unrestricted provider number.
  • Health Careers in the Bush - NT promotes health careers to school students and exposes undergraduate stundents to NT practice.
  • Rural Emergency Skills Training provides an opportunity for GPs to improve their emergency skills using programmable mannequins that simulate real life situations.
  • Medical Advisers who have extensive experience in the NT are on hand to provide support and advice to GPs.
