International Medical Graduates

In July 2006 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) met and determined that a uniform national process for assessing International Medical Graduates (IMGs) be developed, this process is being phased in over all jurisdictions.

The new assessment model provides a variety of pathways to registration depending on the IMG’s previous training and experience, knowledge base, clinical skills and the suitability of their skills and experience for the position for which they are applying.

Three Assessment Pathways
Under the new assessment model there are the following main assessment pathways;

  • Competent Authority Pathway
  • Specialist Pathways for all specialties including General Practice
  • Standard AMC Pathway

For further information on the pathways please go to the:

  • International Medical Graduates page on the AMC website

  • Overseas-Trained Doctors page on the RACGP website

Following initial review of your CV, if GPNNT feels you are suitable to work in the Northern Territory (NT) as a general practitioner, we will assist you in gaining employment.

You will need to:

1. Have your General Practice experience and qualifications assessed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). You will require a letter of referral from GPNNT. Once you have this, we recommend you contact the RACGP directly. Their website address is: www.racgp.org.au  If the college assess your general practice experience as greater than 5 years, GPNNT will be able to further your application.

2. Decide which pathway is relevant for your skills, experience and qualifications

3. Successfully pass the entry requirement for your chosen pathway (AMC MCQ, RACGP AKT or Certificate of Advanced Standing – AMC)

4. Provide evidence of English Language proficiency in accordance with Medical Board policy which requires a minimum of 7 in each band of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or a minimum of B in each band of the Occupational English Test (OET). For more information regarding this and other NT Medical Board policies, please click on this link to go  NT Medical Board English Language Policy

5. Have verification of your Primary source Medical qualifications through the International Credentials Service of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates of the United States (EICS verification). This is administered by the AMC. Information is available at: www.amc.org.au/index.php/img/ver

Once you have provided evidence of all these documents, the recruitment team at GPNNT can begin looking for an appropriate position for you in the NT.

Once you receive a job offer to work in general practice in the NT, you will be required by the NT Medical Board to undertake a clinical assessment conducted by the NT Pre Employment Structured Clinical Interview (NT PESCI) Panel. GPNNT will forward you the self assessment and application forms and a suitable time for the clinical assessment interview will be arranged. For further information about NT PESCI please go to the page IMGPAC.
