Locum GPs

What is the GP Locum Program

A highly successful program managed by GPNNT that aims to support rural and remote General Practitioners (GPs) working in the Northern Territory (NT), through the provision of suitably trained locum GPs to allow the resident GP to take leave.

The Locum Program (LP) has been developed as a retention strategy for rural and remote general practitioners and their families. A review of the program found that "the LP is seen as one of the single most important service in place to support incumbent GPs in rural and remote areas across the Northern Territory."

The LP was established to support rural and remote GPs working in the Northern Territory. The program organises and subsidises the provision of suitably trained locum GPs to allow the resident GP to take annual, sick or emergency leave and to undertake CPD, and other development opportunities e.g. attendance at conferences. The LP also provides stopgap arrangements if required between the GP leaving and a new one commencing.
