Orientation & Training

Why GPNNT offers Orientation & Training Grants

The purpose of a GPNNT Orientation and Training Grant is to ensure that a GP taking up a new position in the NT is appropriately orientated to the practice and has the clinical skills to meet the needs of the community.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who can apply?

Orientation and Training Grants are available to all GPs and contract locums relocating to remote areas of the NT or to another remote community within the NT, who have a minimum one-year contract or commitment to service and meet the other grant eligibility criteria.

Application can be made prior to taking up a position or within two months of relocation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What the grant covers

Orientation activities covered by the grant may include:

  • Accommodation
  • Travel
  • Salary subsidy of up to $300 per day
  • Course costs (excluding university fees)
  • Cross cultural awareness training for the GPs partner and family as appropriate
  • 4WD training (only if the job requires the doctor to travel by 4WD as part of their clinical work)

The total of the Orientation and Training Grant is capped at $5 000 per GP recruitment. All courses covered by the grant must be pre-approved by GPNNT.

Training covered by the grant is intended to upskill the GP to meet the particular needs of their community and as a strategy to improve GP retention in the NT.

Application Process

GPNNT requires that you fill in an GP Grant Application Pack, located on the GP Grants page within our website.
The Workforce Program Officer coordinating the recruitment will convene a Grant Assessment Panel, which includes the Workforce Program Officer, GPNNT Medical Adviser, the employee and an employer representative. The panel is responsible for assessing the application against eligibility criteria and ensuring the orientation and training requested is appropriate to the needs of the community. An interview time will be arranged by the Workforce Program Officer for the panel to meet and discuss the GPs orientation and training needs.

Once the terms of the grant have been agreed upon, a formal contract outlining the funding and administrative conditions of the grant will be made between the GP and GPNNT. Where possible, payment of the GPs orientation and training requirements will be made directly to the provider. Reimbursement of expences associated with the GPs orientation and training will only be made following the receipt of a correctly rendered tax invoice.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Limits

Orientation and training nominated in the grant contract is to be undertaken within three months of commencement except in exceptional circumstances. It is recognised however that unavoidable circumstances can occur form time to time and these will be considered on a case by case basis.
