Aboriginal Mental Health
Mental Health Services in Rural and Remote Areas Stage 2 – Aboriginal Mental Health Worker (AMHW) Program
Program aims:
- provide AMH clients access to culturally appropriate treatment and support
- provide families and clients access to culturally appropriate information and support to reduce the prevalence and impact of mental illness
- provide psychological support and community based solutions to distress and wellbeing issues being experienced in remote Aboriginal communities
Support for community partners:
- funding and support for four fulltime AMHWs at Groote Eylandt, Yirrkala, and Galiwinku
- funding for one mental health nurse at Laynhapuy homelands, and one counsellor at Borroloola
- develop an AMHW model of practice supported by access to professional development activities
- develop and maintain effective working relationships with AMHWs, partner communities, health and other service providers
